Mediterranean Diet’s Impact on Skin Health
The Mediterranean Diet Benefits Emotional Well-being, Study Finds
You are what you eat, and your mood reflects this. A recent study published in Nutrients explored the link between adherence to the Mediterranean Diet (MD), subjective well-being (SWB), and various socioeconomic factors among adults in Greece and Cyprus.
The MD, known for its emphasis on plant-based foods and minimal processing, is recognized by UNESCO and is linked to reduced mortality and lower rates of chronic diseases like cardiovascular issues and diabetes. Recent studies suggest that the MD enhances SWB, attributed to its high antioxidant and nutrient content, so this new study was aimed at confirming these findings.
Study
The study used a cross-sectional design, involving 936 valid responses from Greece and Cyprus, collected via online questionnaires from April 2019 to the end of 2020. Participants’ diet adherence was assessed using the 14-item Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener (MEDAS), and SWB was measured through questions on life satisfaction, anxiety, and energy levels. Most respondents were female, with average ages of 35.1 in Greece and 38.7 in Cyprus. Participants were diverse in terms of income, education, and employment status.
Results
Higher MD adherence was significantly associated with better SWB outcomes, including higher life satisfaction and happiness, and lower levels of worry and depression. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) identified life satisfaction, happiness, and emotional well-being as key factors influenced by MD adherence. Regular physical activity and non-smoking were linked to higher SWB scores.
Conclusions
The study found that higher adherence to the MD significantly enhances SWB, increasing happiness and life satisfaction while reducing worry and depression. It also highlighted the positive impact of healthy lifestyle habits like physical activity and non-smoking on emotional well-being. These findings underscore the importance of diet and lifestyle in influencing well-being.
