A study in the journal Science of the Total Environment explored the environmental impact of a Mediterranean diet with reduced energy intake over one year in participants with metabolic syndrome, finding significant reductions in acidification, eutrophication, and land use due to diet adherence and caloric reduction.
Climate change poses severe threats to public health and agriculture, reducing food quality and increasing disease transmission. With the global population nearing 10 billion by 2050, the environmental impact of food systems will grow, contributing significantly to greenhouse gas emissions and biodiversity loss. Sustainable diets, which promote nutrition and food security while minimizing environmental harm, are crucial. Diets lower in animal products and higher in plant foods are healthier and have a smaller environmental footprint, but specific interventions need further study.
The Study
The study analyzed the environmental benefits of a Mediterranean diet with reduced energy intake in older Spanish adults with metabolic syndrome, focusing on greenhouse gas emissions, acidification, eutrophication, and land use. Data were collected from the PREDIMED-Plus trial, which included 6,874 participants aged 55-75 for men and 60-75 for women, all with metabolic syndrome but no cardiovascular disease. Participants were randomly assigned to an intervention group receiving a Mediterranean diet with reduced energy intake, physical activity guidelines, and behavioral therapy, or a control group receiving general Mediterranean diet advice. Dietary intake and adherence were assessed, and environmental impact indicators were calculated.
Results
The intervention group showed greater reductions in acidification, eutrophication, and land use compared to the control group, alongside significant decreases in caloric intake and higher dietary adherence. Meat was the primary contributor to environmental impact, with fish and seafood contributing more to greenhouse gas emissions in the intervention group. Caloric reduction partially mediated the relationship between diet intervention and environmental impact, while adherence to the diet fully mediated greenhouse gas emissions and energy use.
Conclusions
The study demonstrates the positive impact of a one-year Mediterranean diet intervention with reduced energy intake on environmental sustainability, particularly in reducing acidification, eutrophication, and land use. Despite limitations such as data variability and potential recall bias, the study’s strengths include its real-world assessment and large sample size. The findings suggest Mediterranean diet interventions can mitigate environmental damage, especially regarding meat consumption, though challenges remain in standardizing impact databases and accounting for regional differences. Future research should explore broader dietary patterns and their environmental implications, promoting sustainable nutritional choices for both health and environmental benefits.
